Department of Defense — UAP Role & Official Activity

U.S. Department of Defense · Established 1947

Overview

The Department of Defense (DoD) is the primary U.S. government agency responsible for military and defense matters. Within DoD, the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) portfolio has been managed through several entities, including the UAP Task Force (UAPTF), the Airborne Object Identification and Management Synchronization Group (AOIMSG), and currently the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO). DoD officials have testified at multiple congressional hearings on UAP matters.

DoD's UAP responsibilities derive from statutory authority under Title 10 of the U.S. Code (Armed Forces) and specific provisions in annual National Defense Authorization Acts.
